Hearts give students a second chance!

We have now launched a new feature that makes it clearer for students to play the games on Helpful Games. Many games now include hearts that give players the opportunity to retry a missed question.

How it works

When a student misses a question and has hearts remaining, the question is automatically added to the end of the game round. If the student then answers the question correctly on the second attempt, the entire game round counts as completed.

Example of how hearts work on free text questions:
1. The student has two extra chances to spell the answer correctly. These only apply to this question. There will be 2 new hearts on the next question.
2. The student has been saved by a global heart and this is now shown by the bar turning orange instead of green.
3. The student has used 1 global heart (been saved).
4. The student has 2 global hearts left to use on the remaining questions.

Clear color coding in game results

After a game round, students can easily see how they did through the color markers:

  • Green with checkmark = correct answers
  • Orange with heart = questions saved by a heart
  • Red with X = missed questions

Unlimited attempts

Some game levels have unlimited attempts, which is now clearly indicated by the heart symbol + infinity sign (∞).

Consistent experience

We have also updated the game types multiple choice, free input, image markups, cloze test, and link up so that they all follow the same settings pattern. This gives both teachers creating games and students playing them a more consistent and clear experience.
