The game Around Town: Buildings and Places
Image: Helpful Games

Learn and practice English vocabulary for places and buildings in your neighborhood, including houses, shops, parks, and streets.

Instructions for Around Town: Buildings and Places

This game helps students learn essential English vocabulary for places and buildings in their everyday environment. The words covered include common locations like houses, flats, shops, restaurants, parks, and streets – all fundamental for describing where we live and what we find in our neighborhoods. Understanding these terms enables students to talk about their surroundings, give directions, and participate in conversations about daily life.

The game uses visual recognition combined with written words to strengthen vocabulary retention. Through matching activities and word recognition exercises, students build both receptive and productive knowledge of place-related vocabulary. This content is particularly useful for developing descriptive language skills and can be integrated into lessons about communities, local geography, or everyday routines.

1. Match Pictures to Words (Memory game with images)

MemoryMemory - The level consists of 8 pairs (consisting of words paired with pictures), but a maximum of 6 pairs are practiced per game round. The student's task is to find two cards that match. If two matching cards are found, they are removed from the board. The game is finished when all 6 pairs of cards have been found and no cards are left on the board. There is no limit to the number of allowed misses, so the only thing that counts is finding all card pairs. There is no time limit. If it is too difficult, the player can click the button labeled Cancel - then it will show which pairs of cards match - and try to complete the level again.

2. Find Words from Descriptions (Letter grid puzzle)

Letter gridLetter grid - The level consists of 8 words and all of them are practiced in every game round. The player is shown a board with letters arranged in a grid and must drag the mouse pointer or finger over the letters until the word is found. The words to be found are placed on the board as 4-way straight words and they are listed with hidden letters next to the board. If the student manages to find all the words, the round is won. There is no time limit. If it is too difficult, the player can click the button labeled Cancel - then the correct words will be displayed - and try to complete the level again.

Calculation of knowledge points and medals

Each completed game level in Around Town: Buildings and Places gives 1 knowledge points. You can collect a maximum of 2 knowledge points by completing all 2 levels.

  • Silver medal: after completing 5 rounds.
  • Gold medal: after completing 10 rounds.
Knowledge points are only awarded for levels you have not completed before, meaning those that do not yet have checked green circles.
