Learn to recognize the wheel, screw, inclined plane, wedge, and lever — the simple machines behind all mechanical technology.
Instructions for The Five Simple Machines
The five simple machines — the wheel, screw, inclined plane, wedge, and lever — are fundamental mechanical principles that humans have used for thousands of years. They appear everywhere in daily life: in bicycles, scissors, kitchen knives, staircases, and garlic presses.
In this game, students practise identifying and naming the five simple machines from images, and matching each machine to its function. The game also introduces the golden rule of mechanics: what you gain in force, you lose in distance.
This game fits well within technology and science curricula covering simple mechanisms and how they can be combined to produce movement. It works well as consolidation after a lesson or as independent practice.
1. Identify Mechanisms (Multiple Choice 1)
Multiple Choice - The level consists of 10 multiple choice questions (all of which have pictures) and all of them are practiced in every game round. For each question, the player is given three possible answers, only one of which is correct. It is up to the player to choose the correct option. The student has 3 hearts, giving them another chance at missed multiple choice questions during a game round. Questions have text-to-speech in Swedish. Answers have text-to-speech in Swedish. There is no time limit. When the student has selected all the correct answers, the game round is completed. If it is too difficult, the player can click the button labeled Cancel - then the correct answers will be displayed - and try to complete the level again.2. Identify Mechanisms (Multiple Choice 2)
