Instructions for The Star-Spangled Banner - lyrics
The Star-Spangled Banner is the national anthem of the United States. The lyrics were written by Francis Scott Key in 1814, inspired by the sight of the American flag still flying over Fort McHenry after a British bombardment during the War of 1812. The poem was later set to music and officially adopted as the national anthem in 1931.
In this game, students practice the lyrics to the first verse of the anthem through two different exercises: filling in missing words and arranging words in the correct order. The game is suitable for use in music lessons, history lessons, or as part of a broader unit on American culture and symbols.
1. First verse (Fill in the missing words, Cloze test)
Cloze Test - The level consists of 8 cloze texts and all of them are practiced in every game round. The cloze texts are displayed in the same order each game round. In the game, the student is presented with 8 questions texts where certain parts (words or numbers) are hidden. These words or numbers have been replaced by fields where the student must either fill in the correct word, or select the correct word from a list. Sometimes, there's a question mark ? after the blank - if the player clicks on it a hint will be shown. A cloze text usually requires the reader to understand the context of the text in order to fill in the blank with the correct word. It may therefore be necessary to read the text several times. The student has unlimited number of tries for each fill-in-the-blank. The student has 3 hearts, giving them another chance at missed cloze texts during a game round. The colze texts have text-to-speech in English. There is no time limit. When the student has filled in all the blanks correctly, the game round is complete. If any blank is too difficult, the student can click the Cancel button - this shows all the correct answers to the gaps - and the player can try to complete the cloze text again.2. First verse, only 3 attempts (Fill in the missing words, Cloze test)
