We are looking at adding the –ably suffix onto English root words to create adverbs.

The game Words ending in -ably

Instructions for Words ending in -ably

In English grammar, an adverb is a word that modifies or describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb. One way to form an adverb is to add the suffix -ably to the end of a root word.

For example, if we take the root word "comfort," we can add -ably to create the adverb "comfortably." This adverb describes how the action of the verb is being carried out - in this case, it describes how someone is sitting or lying down in a comfortable way.

Other examples of adverbs formed by adding -ably include "adorably" (from "adorable"), "credibly" (from "credible"), and "horribly" (from "horrible").

In the -ably word game, you'll have the opportunity to practice identifying and creating adverbs by adding -ably to root words. This will help you improve your English vocabulary and grammar skills. Remember to pay attention to the spelling of the root word when adding the suffix -ably, as some words may require additional letters or changes in spelling to form the correct adverb.

Have fun playing the game and maybe also learning new words!

1. Choose (Multiple choice cloze test)

Cloze testCloze test - The level consists of 10 cloze texts and all are practiced every game round. The order of the cloze texts is randomized each game round. In the game, the student is presented with 10 questions texts where certain parts (words or numbers) are hidden. These words or numbers have been replaced by fields where the student must either fill in the correct word, or select the correct word from a list. Sometimes, there's a question mark ? after the blank - if the player clicks on it a hint will be shown. The student has 3 attempts to write the correct word in the game's blanks. A cloze text usually requires the reader to understand the context of the text in order to fill in the blank with the correct word. It may therefore be necessary to read the text several times. There is no time limit. When the student has filled in all the blanks correctly, the game round is complete. If any blank is too difficult, the student can click the Cancel button - this shows all the correct answers to the gaps - and the player can try to complete the cloze text again.

2. Which -ably word? (Guess the word)

Guess wordGuess word - The level consists of 10 words, but a maximum of 1 word are practiced per game round. Here the student has to find the word or sentence by suggesting letters from the alphabet. If the suggested letter is in the requested word, the letter is filled in at all the right places in the letter slots. If the letter is not in the word then a balloon pops. If the player can guess the right letters and find the word before all the 5 balloons run out, the round is won. There is no time limit. If it is too difficult, the player can click the button named Cancel - then the correct word will be displayed - and then try to complete the level again.

3. Find the -ably words (Letter grid)

Letter gridLetter grid - The level consists of 8 words and all are practiced every game round. The player is shown a board consisting of letters in a grid and must drag the mouse pointer or finger over the letters until a word is found. The words to be found are placed on the board as readable words and they are listed with hidden letters next to the board. If the student manages to find all the words, the game is won. There is no time limit. If it is too difficult, the player can click the button named Cancel - then the correct words will be displayed - and then try to complete the level again.

4. Match up (-ably word with description)

MemoryMemory - The level consists of 10 pairs (consisting of words paired with other words) and all are practiced every game round. The student's task is to find two cards that match. If two matching cards are found, they are removed from the board. The game is finished when all 10 pairs of cards have been found and the memory has no cards left. There is no time limit. If it is too difficult, the player can click the button named Cancel - then it will show which pairs of cards match - and then try to complete the level again.
