In these English excersises you'll be able to practise prepositions of place: in, on, and at.

The game Prepositions of place

Instructions for Prepositions of place

We use 'in' in English to talk about a place in(side) an enclosed space, something that has borders. Examples: in a classroom (we have walls), in London (we have city limits), in Canada (we have country borders).

We use 'at' in English to talk about a specific place, often used when deciding on where to meet. Examples: at home, at school, at the library, at the bus stop. It is not the inside of the place that is important, but the place itself (compare "I'll see you at home!" and "I'll see you in the kitchen!".)

We use 'on' in English to talk about a surface, on top of something, or sometimes when we are travelling. Examples: on the roof, on Fleet Street, on the bus (we are technically in(side) the bus but we still say on).

1. Choose the right perposition

Multiple choiceMultiple choice - The level consists of 15 questions, but a maximum of 10 questions are practiced per game round. For each question, the player is given three possible answers. Only one of these is correct. It is up to the player to choose the correct alternative. The student has 3 hearts (extra lives) that keep the game round going. There is no time limit. When the student has selected all the correct answers, the game round is completed. If it is too difficult, the player can click the button named Cancel - then the correct answers will be displayed - and then try to complete the level again.

2. Write the right preposition

Questions with text answersQuestions with text answers - The level consists of 15 questions, but a maximum of 10 questions are practiced per game round. The student has to write the correct answer without color guidance and has 3 attempts to write the correct word or sentence in each question's text field that are not case-sensitive. The student receives feedback on each keystroke to make it easier to type the correct answer. If the entered character is correct, the text turns green and if it's incorrect, the text turns red. There is no time limit. When the student has written all the answers correctly, the game round is completed. If it is too difficult, the player can click the button named Cancel - then the correct answers will be displayed - and then try to complete the level again.

3. Complete sentences (several prepositions)

Cloze testCloze test - The level consists of 10 cloze texts and all are practiced every game round. The order of the cloze texts is randomized each game round. In the game, the student is presented with 10 questions texts where certain parts (words or numbers) are hidden. These words or numbers have been replaced by fields where the student must either fill in the correct word, or select the correct word from a list. Sometimes, there's a question mark ? after the blank - if the player clicks on it a hint will be shown. The student has 3 attempts to write the correct word in the game's blanks. A cloze text usually requires the reader to understand the context of the text in order to fill in the blank with the correct word. It may therefore be necessary to read the text several times. There is no time limit. When the student has filled in all the blanks correctly, the game round is complete. If any blank is too difficult, the student can click the Cancel button - this shows all the correct answers to the gaps - and the player can try to complete the cloze text again.

Calculation of knowledge points and medals

Each completed game level in Prepositions of place gives 1 knowledge points. You can collect a maximum of 3 knowledge points by completing all 3 levels.
In the game Prepositions of place, you can earn a total of 9 medals. Medals are awarded based on how many times you have completed a level:
  • Bronze medal: after completing 2 rounds.
  • Silver medal: after completing 5 rounds.
  • Gold medal: after completing 10 rounds.
Knowledge points are only awarded for levels you have not completed before, meaning those that do not yet have checked green circles. Even after completing a level and earning both knowledge points and medals, you can continue practicing it. However, this will not grant any additional knowledge points or medals.
