Instructions for Infection & response
Assessment and Qualifications Alliance Combined Science (Trilogy) Infection & Response
Pathogens are disease-causing fungi, viruses, bacteria or protists, that can infect both animals and plants. We humans have an immune system, which can protect us from pathogens.
Level 1: Communicable diseases
Level 2: Non-specific response
Level 3: Specific response
Level 4: Antibody response
1. Communicable Diseases (Guess the word)
Guess word - The level consists of 8 words, but a maximum of 1 word are practiced per game round. Here the student has to find the word or sentence by suggesting letters from the alphabet. If the suggested letter is in the requested word, the letter is filled in at all the right places in the letter slots. If the letter is not in the word then a balloon pops. If the player can guess the right letters and find the word before all the 5 balloons run out, the round is won. For each word there is a clue to help the player guess the word. There is no time limit. If it is too difficult, the player can click the button named
Cancel - then the correct word will be displayed - and then try to complete the level again.
2. Non-specific immune system (Fill in the gaps)
Cloze test - The level consists of 1 cloze text. In the game, the student is presented with 1 question texts where certain parts (words or numbers) are hidden. These words or numbers have been replaced by fields where the student must either fill in the correct word, or select the correct word from a list. Sometimes, there's a question mark
? after the blank - if the player clicks on it a hint will be shown. The student has 3 attempts to write the correct word in the game's blanks. A cloze text usually requires the reader to understand the context of the text in order to fill in the blank with the correct word. It may therefore be necessary to read the text several times. There is no time limit. When the student has filled in all the blanks correctly, the game round is complete. If any blank is too difficult, the student can click the
Cancel button - this shows all the correct answers to the gaps - and the player can try to complete the cloze text again.
3. Specific immune response (Choose the correct answer)
Multiple choice - The level consists of 9 questions and all are practiced every game round. For each question, the player is given three possible answers. Only one of these is correct. It is up to the player to choose the correct alternative. The student has 3 hearts (extra lives) that keep the game round going. There is no time limit. When the student has selected all the correct answers, the game round is completed. If it is too difficult, the player can click the button named
Cancel - then the correct answers will be displayed - and then try to complete the level again.
4. Antibody response
Image markups - The level consists of 5 image markup questions and all are practiced every game round. Each question should be answered by selecting the correct marker in the image. Only one of the markers is correct. It is for you to find the right dot in the picture. The student has only one attempt at each picture question. If the student answers a task incorrectly, the game round can be continued, but the round is marked as not completed. There is no time limit. When the student has found all the correct picture markings, the game round is completed. If it is too difficult, the player can click the button named
Cancel - then all the correct dots in the image will be displayed - and then try to complete the level again.
Calculation of knowledge points
Each completed game level gives 1 knowledge point in Infection & response. The maximum number of points (4 knowledge points) is achieved when you pass all 4 levels. You'll get a bronze medal when you complete a level 2 times and a silver medal after 5 completed rounds. A gold medal will be received after 10 completed rounds. In Infection & response, the maximum number of collectable gold medals is 4. You only earn knowledge points for levels that has not been cleared before. A cleared level has a green background above. Even when you have completed a level, you can continue practicing at that level, but it gives you no more knowledge points.
